Jon Carter - Computer Music II - Spring 2009

Milk Basket Bicycle

An original composition for electric viola and laptop.

Reflection

Overall, I was very happy with the way this project turned out. One of my goals that I set out to complete this semester was to have a completely new electronic piece on my senior recital, and I achieved it. I didn't want to recycle any of my previous computer music work just because it was a requirement to have an electronic piece on my senior recital - I wanted to go above and beyond and write something that no one in the audience had heard before (and except for one, the same applies to every other piece that was premiered on my recital). In my entire four years at Stetson, I have not seen a single composition major write a new electronic piece for his or her senior recital, and I think that's a shame. I received extremely complimentary feedback from the audience about this piece and, funnily enough, a fellow composition major called it "viola metal". If I would have had more time, I would have liked to changed the percussion element of the Max patch to develop some truly unique percussive sounds and, in general, improve the quality of the percussion. As it is now, it doesn't have a distinct enough sound from the viola to bring attention to itself and add depth to the composition.
